Shiners. was created by Jonlate (Jon Late)
Hi guys n girls,

I was just wondering about the rules for keeping Rainbow Shiners, Notropis chrosomus, in Ireland, or other Shiner types.

It seems that they can be kept in water down to 10 degrees and so are banned in the Uk. ( I don’t mind being corrected on this)

They look so much better than goldfish, so I wondered if they can be kept here and if so who sells them, has them?

Looking forward to your replies.

J

@liam That is what I wanted to do, put them outside in a tub for the summer.
I read about them in the tropical fish magazine this month, and thought that’s worth a go.

@alan I am not sure if they would like to be taken out of a tropical setting and put outdoors in a tub. Alas the wife has also decided to put a flower tub in the exact place I wanted to put the fish tub. It’s a first come first served in our house!! Thanks for the offer though.

What will you do with them in the winter?
One thought I had was to try and put them in my shed with a small tank heater in it, but didn’t want a big tub in the shed!
I don’t really think I will be allowed another tank in the house, even for the winter only!!
I did consider just leaving them out and hoping for the best, but that’s not fair on the fish really. But it would be interesting to see what happened.
What are your thoughts for over wintering them?
