Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

ok so a few weeks ago I had 3 discus in my 125 litre and I was waiting for my larger tank to establish, the smallest discus was being bullied a bit but nothing to serious so I decided to put him in the big tank to see how hed get on, he was grand but took a disliking to my sea and was very aggressive towards him but the sae could hande it, so today I brought up the two remaining discus to the new tank with the smallest discus in there, the smallest discus is absolutely hammering one of the new discus so m am just looking for some advice to calm this down as he is being marked up on his fins already

Alan,
Bullying among Cichlids has been an age-old problem.
Because fish all have their own personalities it's very difficult to make a hard and fast suggestion.
I'm wondering if you might have any smaller Cichlids which you could add to the tank to take some of the pressure away from the poor bullied lad - something like a couple of smaller Angels, for example?
This may sound a bit of a simple solution to be suggesting - but it's what I'd be trying as a first step myself.
Failing that I would think a move back to the 125 for the one which is suffering - before the other two do irreparable harm to it.
From my own experiences with Discus I would venture to suggest that three really isn't an ideal amount to have, you might look to increase by a few more to help spread the aggression around a bit. Trouble is, with the cost of Discus being what it is, this isn't always an affordable option.
I hope you get something sorted out.

I agree with John on the numbers, 3 being a little on the low side for Discus. 5/6 should really be the minimum number to reduce this issue.

You could also try changing the tank around in terms of whatever furniture (ie. plants, rocks, bogwood etc.) that you might have had in it with the original 1 discus. Changing it around disrupts the territoriality of the existing dweller allowing the 2 new additions to establish themselves somewhat.

+1 on that. Whenever I have "trouble" cichlids that's the first thing I do. Puts everyone back zero territory-wise.

I put the bully back into the 125 as he was relentless and the other fish were showing signs of damage, I will be getting a few more discus tonight to increase the numbers and I will put the bully back in next week and see how he acts then

You could also try feed a bit more

ive had this problem with tangs as most people do on the salty side but i found that when they were fat and full they couldn't be arsed to drag the full asses around for a chase or scrap
do you feed beef heart that will fill them up quick enough and like i said maybe give a little extra especially to the one who is the bully
