Question about freezing things to kill nasties?

Im curious about this when it comes to killing nasties in aquarium sand and on bog wood etc...

I have taken a load of sand and bogwood from a tank and put it in buckets...Now I left it all out the back soaking in water...

What I wanna know is would the freezing temperatures we are now having kill off any nasty organisms that may be residing in said sand and bogwood....It seems to me that that any tropical aquatic creature has temperature limits and I know boiling stuff and baking it in an oven will kill most nasties...

So does freezing them have the same effect???

Just an early morning question for the geeks amongst us LOL

Freezing may only halt or slow down grow/reproduction as opposed to killing them (depends on the nasties)

I've not tried freezing as a method to rid things of Ich, but I understand that cryopreservation of Ich for research purposes has proven a bit more tricky than some other species to get the parasites to survive on thawing.

For Ich, isolation from a host for a good quarantine period and medication are what I would use.

Many organisms can go into statis when frozen but will re-animate when thawed................so freezing is not the best method to kill off nasties as a general tactic.
