Cooling water

Any suggestions as to what to do when your tank gets too hot!

What can you do to cool down your tank in this hot weather? Is it dangerous to put ice cubes into the tank, or do a water change with very cold water?

What a great problem to have!!!!

As you suggest, it's a nice problem to have.

For what it's worth I always use cooler water for water changes/top ups and the fish here don't mind - at least they've never complained about it! But more seriously I find using even cold water can often stimulate an interest in spawning activity.

I have also used ice cubes on occasion - a scenario comes to mind when a heater siezed closed and caused a potentially dangerous temperature hike and the ice cubes seemed like the best method to quickly reduce temperature so I put two trays-worth in. It barely dropped the temperature so I had to drastically drop water level and top up from the cold tap.Luckily nothing much expired and what did die was as a result, I think, of the water having got so hot as opposed to the influx of the ice cubes and subsequent cold water.

I recall reading - many years ago - of a person creating a system which entailed diverting their external filter return into a small refrigerator but this might - even given the warnings of 'global warming' (even here in Ireland) - be a little 'over the top'.
Some Native Marine Tank keepers use a specific cooler system, but - again - this mightn't be suited to your set-ups either.

This is Ireland after all - enjoy the warmth while it lasts and replace some water with cold - that's what I will do if the water goes much above the low eighties.

Thanks john,
I will just give it a good water change then, hopefully that will do the job.
Thanks for the help.
